Scarlett Johansson is an actress, with dual Danish and American citizenship.
Scarlett Johansson: Childhood
Scarlett Johansson was born in New York. Her father, Karsten, is a Danish architect. Her mother, Melanie Sloan, is from an Ashkenazi Jewish family from the Bronx, in New York. Scarlett has a sister Vanessa, who also acts, we well as an older brother, Adrian, a twin brother, Hunter, who acts as well, and a half-brother Christian.
Scarlett gained her acting training at Professional Children's School in Manhattan. She graduated in 2002.
Scarlett Johansson: Acting Career
Johansson's film debut came in 1994, when she was cast in North. In 1998, her performance in The Horse Whisperer, when she was just 14, earned her a great deal of praise from film critics and audiences alike.
In 2001, Johansson appeared in Ghost World. Two years later, her performance alongside Bill Murray in Lost in Translation earned her a Best Actress award. In fact, she was nominated a second time that year, in the same category, for her role in Girl with a Pearl Earring. She won a Best Actress BAFTA for Lost in Translation.
2004 was a busy year for Johansson. Not only was she invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, but she also appeared in three films: The Perfect Score, In Good Company and A Love Song for Bobby Long.
2005 saw Johansson star alongside Ewan McGregor in The Island. She also starred in Match Point, directed by Woody Allen, later that year.
In 2006, Johansson starred in The Black Dahlia, a film noir movie, directed by Brian De Palma. Johansson received a number of negative reviews for her role in the film, with many arguing that she was a bad choice for the role and had been miscast. The same year, she also appeared in The Prestige, directed by Christopher Nolan.
Johansson's next two major projects were 2007's The Nanny Diaries and 2008's The Other Boleyn Girl, which also starred Eric Bana and Natalie Portman.
Scarlett Johansson: Music Career
In 2007, Scarlett Johansson recorded an album entitled Anywhere I Lay My Head, which was an album of Tom Waits songs as well as one original composition. The album was produced by TV On The Radio's Dave Sitek. David Bowie features on the album, as do members of the New York band The Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
Scarlett Johansson: Personal Life
Although Scarlett shies away from divulging personal details to the press, it is known that she dated Josh Hartnett for two years until the end of 2006. She has also been linked by the press to romances with Benicio del Toro, Jared Leto and Justin Timberlake.
In September 2008, Johansson married the Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds in British Columbia.
In March 2008, a 20-minute date with Scarlett Johansson was auctioned on EBay in aid of Oxfam. The winning bidder paid £20,000 for the privilege of attending a film premiere with the star.
